About the Law Office of Sharon Barney
Sharon is a litigator, negotiator, legal advisor, and humanist.
She's also a first-generation immigrant, an Army brat, and the first in her family to obtain a law degree.
Sharon went to law school for one reason: to use her legal knowledge to ensure people are heard in the justice system, no matter their income or circumstance.
Before opening the Law Office of Sharon Barney, Sharon created and directed an immigration legal program within a refugee resettlement agency based in Boston, Massachusetts. Sharon represented clients in their immigration matters, including naturalizations, green-card applications for family members, and advisement on remedies available for victims of crime. In addition to direct representation, she also served on immigrants' rights and community service coalitions, including the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA).
In Centre County, Sharon worked as the legal director and staff attorney of a legal program within a domestic violence and sexual assault nonprofit organization. She represented domestic violence and sexual assault survivors in family law and immigration law matters.
While practicing in central Pennsylvania, Sharon has represented clients in divorce, child custody, child and spousal support, Protection From Abuse (PFA), and equitable distribution matters. Many of her cases involved child custody litigation, including custody hearings at the Centre County Court of Common Pleas. She also offered immigration representation, including a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) self-petition and advice on U-Visas.
Sharon is married to a wonderful husband and has one (energetic!) dog, a Corgi-Jack Russell mix. She enjoys playing tennis, watching documentaries, and baking.
Sharon has devoted her legal career to removing barriers to her clients' rights to justice.
She knows that when her clients have a legal problem, they need a dedicated, compassionate, and sophisticated attorney to advocate for their interests. Sharon has the legal skills to guide her clients with high-quality service in their best interest, but believes that clients are the ultimate decision-makers in their cases, as they must live with the consequences after the case is over.
Sharon practices the client-centered approach to lawyering. Instead of telling you what to do, Sharon provides you with legal options and you decide the next steps. As long as your decision is ethical and does not violate Sharon's professional obligations, she'll work with you to carry your decision through.
This may mean that you decide not to move forward with filing a complaint. Or, that you keep Sharon "on-call" for only the times that you need her most. But maybe it means going to trial, if this course of action will achieve the best possible legal outcome for you. In any of these situations, Sharon can advise you at each step and help project its consequence.
Sharon differs from other lawyers because she offers payment alternatives beyond hourly billing. She also accepts debit and credit card payments. Depending on your situation, Sharon can limit her representation to simple drafting or proceed with full trial preparation. Each case is different because each client is different.
Talking to a lawyer, like Sharon, sooner than later can help preserve your legal claim or ensure a better strategy for your case moving forward. Contact Sharon today.
